Local guide

North Shore, South Shore and in between: Nassau County homes

Nassau County's homes change a lot from one shore to the other. The North Shore, from Great Neck east through the old Gold Coast, has large estates, hilly lots and homes with water views over the Sound. The South Shore, from Long Beach to the canal neighborhoods of Freeport and Massapequa, is low-lying and close to the bays. And in the middle, places like Garden City, Hempstead and Levittown are full of capes, ranches and colonials, many expanded over the years with dormers and additions.

Expanded capes and ranches are some of the most common homes we see, and they share a typical Wi-Fi problem: the router sits where the cable line first entered decades ago, and the added second floor or rear extension ends up out of range. A wired access point in the addition, or one per floor, solves it far better than adding more plug-in extenders. It also gives LIRR commuters who work from home part of the week a dependable connection in the home office.

On the South Shore, think about water before mounting anything. Homes on canals and near the bays should keep network equipment, recorders and media gear off the lowest level, with a battery backup in case of outages. Outdoor cameras and speakers near the water should be rated for salt air and mounted with corrosion-resistant hardware. Water leak sensors in basements and near water heaters can alert your phone early, and raised homes may need the network extended to an upper-level office or bedroom wing that was added during the rebuild. On docks and bulkheads, cameras should be mounted high enough to stay clear of spray.

North Shore estates bring long driveways, gates, pool houses and guest cottages that need to share one network and one set of controls. Whole-home audio, motorized shades on water-facing windows and lighting scenes fit naturally in larger homes. Gate intercoms with video let you see and speak to visitors from your phone and open the gate remotely. Whatever part of Nassau County you live in, we plan the installation around the property rather than a one-size-fits-all package.
