How to choose a Control4 dealer

Control4 is only as good as the dealer who designs, programs and supports it. What to ask before you hire one.

Why the dealer matters so much

Control4 is sold, installed and programmed only through authorized dealers. The same equipment can feel effortless or frustrating depending on how it was designed and programmed, and how the dealer supports it afterward. You're choosing a long-term partner, not just an installer.

1. Are they an authorized Control4 dealer?

Only authorized dealers can program and register Control4 systems. Check the Control4 dealer locator, and ask how long they've worked with Control4.

2. How do they design the system?

A good dealer asks how you live: your mornings, movie nights, who uses which rooms and what bothers you today. Then they propose scenes and keypads around that, not just a list of equipment.

3. Do they take the network seriously?

Most Control4 problems start with the network. Ask what network equipment they install, whether access points are wired, and how they keep devices reachable when your internet provider changes routers. See networks for Control4.

4. What happens after the install?

  • Can they make changes remotely?
  • Do they offer support plans or remote monitoring?
  • How fast do they respond when something stops working?
  • Will they document your system so it isn't locked to one person?

5. Do they support systems they didn't install?

A dealer who takes over and fixes other installers' systems has seen what goes wrong and how to prevent it. It's also a sign they'll stand behind yours. See switching dealers.

6. Can they do the whole house?

Lighting, shades, audio, video, cameras, locks and Wi-Fi all touch Control4. One company handling all of it means one call when something needs attention.

Red flags

  • A quote with no questions about how you live
  • No plan for the network
  • No support after the install
  • Vague answers about who programs the system
  • Pressure to buy the biggest package
