The short answer
Lutron RadioRA 3 is a lighting and shade control system. Control4 is a whole-home automation system that also controls lighting and shades, plus TVs, music, cameras, locks, climate and more. If lighting and shades are all you want, RadioRA 3 is a strong choice. If you want one app and one set of keypads for the whole house, Control4 is the center, and it can work alongside Lutron.
What RadioRA 3 does best
Lutron is known for reliable dimming and some of the best motorized shades available. RadioRA 3 uses Lutron keypads and dimmers with the Lutron app, scenes and schedules. It's a focused, very dependable lighting system, and it works well in both new construction and existing homes.
What Control4 does best
Control4 ties the whole house together. One scene can dim the lights, close the shades, turn on the TV and the right source, start music outside and lock the doors. It controls audio and video distribution, cameras, door stations, thermostats and more, all from one app, remotes, touch screens and keypads.
Can you use both?
Yes, and it's common. Many homes run Lutron lighting and shades with Control4 on top, so the Lutron system handles dimming and shades while Control4 runs scenes that include everything else. The key is planning the keypads so people aren't confused by two systems.
Keypads and the look on the wall
Both systems use engraved keypads, and both look clean on the wall. The difference is what a button can do. A Lutron keypad sets lights and shades. A Control4 keypad can do that and also start music, turn on the TV, lock up or arm the alarm. In homes that use both, we plan which keypads belong to which system so every button makes sense to the people using it.
Everyday use
Most people in the house will never open an app. They'll press a button by the door or say good night to a voice assistant. Both systems support schedules, sunrise and sunset timing and voice control. Control4 adds remotes and touch screens that bring lighting together with entertainment, so movie night is one button instead of three.
Wiring and reliability
Both systems are reliable when designed well. The biggest factors are planning keypad locations with the electrician, using the right box sizes and neutral wires where needed, and a stable home network for the apps and remote access. In finished homes, both have wireless devices that fit existing switch boxes.
Growing over time
Think about where you'll be in five years. Many families start with lighting and shades, then add music, cameras and climate. If that's likely, starting with Control4 (or planning Lutron to sit under Control4) avoids replacing keypads later. If lighting is truly the whole goal, RadioRA 3 alone keeps things simple.

- Already have Lutron and want more: add Control4 and keep your Lutron devices
- New construction: decide before pre-wire, because keypad locations and wiring depend on it
