Still on an HC-250, HC-800 or an early EA controller? We upgrade Control4 homes to a current CORE controller and the latest Control4 OS, and keep everything that still works.
Authorized DealerControl4 has been in homes for more than fifteen years, and many of the first systems are still running on controllers that no longer get updates. Older HC-series controllers can't run Control4 OS 3, which means no current app features, fewer new device drivers and a system that slowly falls behind your phone, your TV and your Wi-Fi.
An upgrade doesn't mean starting over. In most homes the wiring, keypads, dimmers, speakers and many other devices stay. We replace the brain of the system, move your rooms and scenes to the new controller, update the programming and test every room with you before we leave.
Signs it's time
When an older Control4 system needs an upgrade.
- Your controller is an HC-250, HC-800, HC-1000 or an early EA model and it no longer updates
- The Control4 app is slow, drops connection or is missing features your friends have
- New TVs, streaming boxes, cameras or locks don't have drivers for your version
- You changed internet providers or routers and parts of the system stopped working
- Touch screens or remotes are discontinued and replacements aren't available
- You want voice control, remote access or notifications and your system can't do it

- New CORE controller sized for your home, installed in your rack or closet
- Your project moved to the new controller and to current Control4 OS
- Network cleanup: reserved addresses, better Wi-Fi, a router that won't break the system
- Rooms, scenes and schedules rebuilt and tested with you
- Optional: new Halo remotes, touch screens, keypads or 4Sight remote access

Upgrade your old Control4 system: common questions
What about Control4 X4?
X4 (OS 4.0) is Control4's newest platform. An upgrade to a CORE controller gets you there; see upgrading to Control4 X4 for what changes.
Can an HC-800 or HC-250 run the latest Control4 OS?
No. The HC-series controllers stay on older versions of Control4 OS. To get OS 3 and the current app you need a newer controller, which is the heart of an upgrade.
Do I have to replace my keypads and dimmers?
Usually not. Most wired and many wireless Control4 lighting devices keep working with a new controller. We check every device during the first visit and tell you exactly what, if anything, needs replacing.
Can you upgrade a system another dealer installed?
Yes. Many of our upgrades are homes where the original installer is gone or no longer answers. See switching to a new Control4 dealer.
How long does an upgrade take?
Most homes are upgraded in a day or two, depending on the size of the system and how much programming is being rebuilt. We plan it so the house is never left without lights or music overnight.
